Se7en, you is all I need…

…to chase my Monday blues away.

Orchid gave me Se7en‘s 24/Seven album as a birthday gift and I’m listening to it right now. I’ve got it on a loop and on my second run of the CD, I suddenly snorted outloud when the track Baby U started playing.

In Baby U, the 13th track of the album, Se7en sings: Baby, you IS all I need (Listen to the song here).

Sweetheart, it’s Baby, you ARE all I need…and guess what? Listeners can’t miss it because it’s the hook of the song!

I don’t get it, the lyricist got You are beautiful, You are all I need correct (both phrases appear in the track) but they got the all-important hook wrong?

First it’s Rain unintentionally using the F-word in the English version of Sad Tango and asking chicks to lide (he meant ride) with him in Free Way.

My dear Hallyu singers, I know you’re still learning English but the hook of a song is important and that, at least, should be spot on in both pronunciation and grammar. You can use lide and You IS all I need everywhere else in the song, but not the chorus, OK?

Also, producers who worked on the album with the guys should be shot. Why didn’t you correct the star? You is going down, boy.

  • i’m pretty sure the you is all i need is purposely ghetto’ed

maybe its just cuz I am american and from the ghettozzz, But I have listened to this song a bagillion and 1 times and never once noticed a grammatical error. xD I’m usually quite tickled by Enrgish BUT I think this is just trying to be ebonicful or ‘urban’ as one of my canadian friends might say xP

on the other hand Eric’s rap was -horrific-

Oh my goodness, that’s just a train wreck of a rap! It’s so bad you have to read it thrice!

You know, they’re just stringing together words that rhyme…who cares if it doesn’t mean a thing.

Hallyu stars, if you SERIOUSLY want to make it internationally – apart from being the biggest laughing stock on earth – please avoid Engrish.

Eh, most Korean songs have random Engrish. At least it’s not like:

    Shinhwa – U

    [Eric rap]

“Oh~ 난 깜짝 놀래(surprise) Spanish food with guacamole
Hey yo shorty happy birthday 생일선물은 딱정벌레
What mami you don’t like it (Na) Drop top benz crome wheels you don’t like it
You can have it sub woofer bangs heavy
All I need in my life it’s (you) “

  • Yes, after much rolling on the floor with laughter at the expense of this entry, a friend of mine referred me to Wikipedia’s entry on Engrishhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Engrish.

So yes, I’m open to the fact that Se7en singing You IS all I need
is done on purpose…but it just didn’t gel with the track.

If he said it in a street-style rap mid-song, then I wouldn’t bat an eye at the intentional/unintentional use of Engrish.

The Engrish phenomenon started in 2001 with All your base are belong to ushttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_your_base_are_belong_to_us

But that’s still not going to stop me from pointing out these obvious mistakes ;-).

You IS going down…. awrite, sounds like some gangsta slang to me :p

  • Hello anonymous, where exactly is “here”? The States? Korea?

  • Anonymous

well… actually… I say you is all the time instead of you are… But everyone does it here, it’s just the slang…^-^

  • Yes, I’m game for it. Anyone wants my resume? You know where to find me. 😉

  • Orchid

Hahaha Liz. Maybe they should hire you to vet their albums (especially those tracks with English lyrics) before releasing it.

That could be a job for you. 😉
