Jewel in the Palace (2003)

Korean title: Dae Jang-geum (대장금)

What’s popping:

This is the wildly popular period drama that had drama addicts all over the world hooked to the boob tube. Shown in Iran, China, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, Brunei, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, Australia, the US and Canada (phew!), this epic drama made a star out of its lead actress Lee Young-ae (이영애).

Now, my dear friends, Jewel in the Palace is enjoying a second run in Malaysia on pay TV! So if you weren’t K-popped! then, you can serve yourself up to be K-popped now.

I caught the 3rd and 4th episode last night. Whoo hoo, the drama is oh-so-promising! Currently, we are following the adventures of Jang-geum as a wee little lass (played by Jo Jung-eun).

After the back-to-back episodes yesterday, 10-year-old Jang-geum already made it as one of the King’s ladies-in-waiting trainee…well on her way to fulfilling her dead mother’s wish.

Isn’t the actress playing young Jang-geum adorable? I just wanna cuddle her and take her home…mini-hanbok and all.

The drama, so far, has intrigue and heart, and I hope I’m disciplined enough to tune in every weekend to watch the story unfold.

The plot:

Epic drama that is loosely based on the historical figure depicted in the Annals of the Joseon Dynasty. Jang-geum (Lee Young-ae) was the first female royal physician during Korea’s Joseon Dynasty.

Watch it:

  • Astro Wah Lai Toi (Channel 311 – beginning Oct 1, all Astro channels will have 3 digits. Check your TV guide.)
  • Every Saturday and Sunday, from Sept 29 onwards
  • 10.30pm to 12.30am (two episodes back-to-back)
  • Toggle Mandarin or (authentic) Korean audio with your choice of Bahasa Malaysia or Chinese subtitles (yay!). If you choose BM subtitles, the Chinese one still shows…guess it appears by default.

Did you know that there’s a Korean restaurant named after the drama in KL?

Here’s a blogger’s review of the restaurant ‘Da Chang Jin‘.
