Young actors inject fresh air to Korean ‘sageuk’ dramas

K-pop idols are being recruited to give Korean ‘sageuk’ dramas a breath of fresh air. Gone are the days where sageuk dramas sport the same old actors. Is it time for the ‘sageuk’ king Song Il Gook to take a break with these new ones?

Read on to find out which drama your favourite k-pop idol is participating in….

Historical dramas, or better known as sageuk dramas among K-drama addicts, are quite the ‘in’ thing lately as they have been getting good ratings despite competing against dramas of other genres.

What are their secret weapons? Young actors of course, most preferably idols who have a huge fan base. But sageuk dramas are taxing on the tight schedules of these idols (elaborate costume changes, make-up sessions and etc.) and therefore there are not many who dare to take up the challenge.

Examples of sageuk dramas that have been garnering great attention are Sungkyunkwan Scandal (who could forget the Joseon F4 flower boys comprising of Park Yoochun, Yoo Ah In, Soong Joong Ki and Park Min Young), Deep-Rooted Tree (Soong Joong Ki and Shin Se Kyung), and Warrior Baek Dong-Soo (Ji Chang Wook and Yoo Seung Ho).

THE MOON THAT EMBRACES THE SUN: Tearjerker drama of the year!

;

Meanwhile, The Moon That Embraces The Sun that concluded earlier this year had the greatest storyline and cast that every K-drama fan could wish for. The star-studded cast had Kim Soo Hyun, Jung Il Woo, as well as Han Ga In! And not to mention their younger selves portrayed by Lee Min Ho, ZE:A’s Siwan, Yeo Jin Goo, Kim Yoo Jung and Kim So Hyun!

What surprised most viewers of The Moon That Embraces The Sun were the outstanding performance of these talented young actors portraying their Joseon characters, thus giving the drama viewing time an added plus on top of the amazing script by the screenwriter.

The recently concluded Rooftop Prince also had a staple of young actors who contributed to the huge success of the drama. The stellar cast include Park Yoochun, Lee Min Ho, Choi Woo Shik and Jung Suk Won as the Joseon entourage who travelled 300 years to the future, as well as Han Ji Min, Lee Tae Sung, and Jung Yoo Mi.

Riding on the time-travel theme in sageuk dramas is the currently airing Time Slip Dr. Jin drama starring another JYJ member, Kim Jaejoong. Jaejoong plays a high ranking officer, Kim Kyung Tak, who is an illegitimate son seeking his father’s recognition. His character is engaged to Park Min Young’s character, but the emergence of Song Seung Hun’s character from the future soon becomes a threat to their relationship.

You’ll find this interesting. Handsome doctor found himself back in the Joseon dynasty!
What to do….in Time Slip Dr. Jin.

In the meantime, another drama with the same premise as Time Slip Dr. Jin is the works. They have apparently casted Lee Min Ho of Boys Over Flowers and City Hunter fame as the main lead. The drama, titled Faith, is slated to broadcast in August this year, yet fans of the young hottie are already hyped up!

I must admit I’m a huge fan of sageuk dramas, not only for the eye candy, but for the intricate storylines as well as the beautiful costumes and scenery!

Are you a fan of sageuk dramas? If you have yet to watch any, you now have a great excuse to do so!
