Goodbye 2015, Hello 2016! Another year has passed. Let’s take a moment to go through what happened in Malaysia’s Hallyu scene this year, shall we?
JANUARY ~ MARCH
JAN 2 – Sungha Jung Malaysia Tour in Sabah. Not an idol but Sungha Jung is the first Korean talent that graced our shores in 2015. For 3 days!
JAN 3 – Sungha Jung Malaysia Tour in Sarawak
JAN 4 – Sungha Jung Malaysia Tour in Kuala Lumpur
JAN 10 – Innisfree Fiesta with Lee Minho. Malaysia must be in love with Lee Minho because this handsome actor is back again in Malaysia as the spokesperson of Korea’s most trusted natural beauty brand, innisfree.
JAN 10 – Let’s Fly! with B1A4 & Acer. B1A4 took Malaysia by storm not because of their singing or dancing talents, but because of another reason. And not a good one! The group’s popularity rose in Malaysia after the controversial fan meeting held in Kuala Lumpur. And just when we thought K-pop is over in Malaysia, but NO, more were coming!
JAN 16 till 18 – Bii in Kuala Lumpur. Korean-Taiwanese singer, Bii came to Malaysia for 4 days promotional tour of his 3rd album ‘Action Bii’ and to officially announce his career’s first concert, which was held in Malaysia <<Bii My Love Live in Malaysia>> on 21st March 2015.
JAN 17 till 18 – On the same day, k-pop group K-MUCH was in Malaysia for K-MUCH First Showcase in Melaka.
JAN 23 – KyoChon Malaysia opened their 3rd branch in Malaysia at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur, which is also the world’s largest branch!
JAN 23 – We had a Party of The Century with 2AM at Empire City, Kuala Lumpur. Who knows that might be the last party with 2AM as the members (except Jokwon) decided not to renew contract with JYP.
JAN 24 – BOYFRIEND First Mini Concert in Malaysia – Bewitch! was supposed to be held in Kuala Lumpur but sadly was cancelled due to the flood. Well, at least that was the reason gave by the organizer.
FEB 7 – TAEYANG heated Malaysia for his World Tour ‘RISE’ in Malaysia and we surely had a hot night!
FEB 11 – Super Junior’s Siwon and his Dragon Blade team was in town to promote their new movie.
MAR 8 – IME Production brought the masterpiece from Korean Traditional Arts Performance, MISO : Baebijang-jeon to Kuala Lumpur for fans to enjoy another Korean culture.
MAR 21 – GOT7 Fan Meeting. GOT7 held their very first fan meeting in Kuala Lumpur and received a lot of praises. They even took initiatives to wear gloves during the hi-touch session.
MAR 21 – On the same day, Bii was back to Malaysia for Bii First Overseas Solo Concert at Stadium Negara, Kuala Lumpur. We were at GOT7 fan meeting so we missed what happened there.
MAR 26 – The coronation of Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar as the state’s 5th Sultan was celebrated for a week long and among them, SISTAR was invited to perform in front of Johor citizens.
MAR 29 – The next day, T-ARA graces Johor Bahru for the same event.
MAR 29 – Johor is far from Kuala Lumpur but we were not too sad as SNSD and SHINee were here for F1 post-race concert in Sepang. They were awesome! No doubt!
APRIL ~ JUNE
APRIL 4 – Ailee and Davichi performed at AIA LIFE KOREA Annual Convention & Awards. It was a closed door event at Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
APRIL 10 till 11 – ASEAN International Film Festival & Award was held in Sarawak this year and k-pop group NOLZA was invited for opening performance. But before that, they were meeting fans at Riverside Shopping Complex. NOLZA performed at AIFFA 2015 Gala Night on April 11th.
APRIL 24 – Either Malaysia loves Lee Minho or Lee Minho loves Malaysia, but for sure this hunk is back again for the Grand launch of 11StreetMY at NU Sentral, Kuala Lumpur.
MAY 1 – Royal Pirates 1st Showcase in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah. Royal Pirates hijacked Borneo, and we were there to witness this talented band!
MAY 3 – Not enough! Royal Pirates 1st Showcase in Malaysia was continued in Kuala Lumpur.
MAY 11 – BTS was trying to be ninjas, they came secretly to Kota Kinabalu, Sabah but was caught filming and photoshooting for their summer photobook.
JUNE 6 – BTS The Red Bullet Concert Tour was held at Mega Arena Star, Kuala Lumpur.
JUNE 14 – VIXX members were special judges at K-Pop World Festival 2015 in Malaysia. They also performed a few songs in front of their loyal fans.
JUNE 27 – Previously in Sabah, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur, Sungha Jung was back for Sungha Jung Live in Penang.
JULY ~ SEPTEMBER
JULY 4 – CNBLUE graced our shores for The Class Grand Opening at Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur.
JULY 17 till 19 – Korea Day 2015 at Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur
JULY 24 – BANG BANG BANG! BIGBANG 2015 WORLD TOUR ‘MADE’ was held in Kuala Lumpur.
JULY 25 – BIGBANG wrote the history as the first K-pop artist to hold 2 days consecutive concerts in Malaysia.
AUG 20 till 23 – Korean Film Festival 2015 offers Korean film lovers a chance to experience the vibrancy of the Korean film industry.
AUG 25 – Multi-talented Korean American star, Jay Park flew to Malaysia for Coach Malaysia’s KLCC Modern Luxury store opening party.
SEPT 4 till 6 – HIGH4 held 3 days showcase at Seremban Prima, Summit USJ and Hartamas Shopping Centre .
SEPT 5 – Gary of ‘Running Man’ made an appearance at the Kuala Lumpur MATTA Fair.
SEPT 12 – MTV World Stage Malaysia is one of the biggest Southeast Asian music nights of the year and this time they featured APINK, Jason Derulo,Carly Rae Jepsen, SEKAI NO OWARI and Stacy.
OCTOBER ~ DECEMBER
SEPT 30 till Oct 9 – Not happening in Malaysia but by believing in online media’s impact on spreading the Korean Wave, KOFICE introduced “Korea Joa” project; a program where all the members of media are given the opportunity to visit South Korea and cover various aspects of Korea such as K-pop, drama, food and cultures. K-popped! was invited to represent Malaysia. Check out our 10 days coverage here.
OCT 24 till 25 – Gyeonggi-do Korean Food Fair 2015.
NOV 11 – HAHA celebrated Pepero Day with Malaysian fans at 11Street Love 11.
DEC 11 – SUPER JUNIOR’s Kangin & Leeteuk made a special appearance at SPAO Grand Opening in Pavilion, KL
DEC 27 – Korea Nation Day, the biggest fan gathering in Malaysia
Not that bad for 2015. Quite aggressive in the first half of the year but slowed down at the year end. How many events did you attend? We may have missed out a few events, but it’s OK, we’re ready for brand new year 2016! KAJAAA!
