As 2016 closed the curtain, we are back with our year end post! If you are a long time fan of our site, you might be familiar with our round-up of Hallyu events in Malaysia. Take a look at how Hallyu events in Malaysia growed: 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015.

We expect 2017 will be more merrier than 2016. But, before that, let’s go through what happened to Hallyu in Malaysia for 2016.

JANUARY ~ MARCH

JAN 2 – A bad start for 2016. 2016 K-POP New Year Concert was supposedly to feature 3 K-pop groups ; HIGH4, B.I.G & HALO was cancelled due to unforseen circumstances that have occurred internationally and locally, said the organizer.

MAR 05 – Our economy was not doing so well in early 2016, so did the Hallyu. The LEGEND is the first group who landed in our shores for their fan meeting.

MAR 12 – Top boy group EXO heals the fans with EXO Planet #2 The EXO’luXion held at Stadium Merdeka.

MAR 17 – Lee Kwang Soo was back in Malaysia as the guest at Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Launching Event.

MAR 25 – Lee Min Ho is the face of Kyochon for few years already and he was here in Kuala Lumpur to attend the official launch of the KyoChon restaurant in Pavilion!

APRIL ~ JUNE

APR 14 till 18 – BIGFLO fans were in a festive mood when the idols were here for four days promo tour, starting with a showcase at Bintang Megamall, Miri and The Summit Subang USJ. They had a ‘Fans Gathering Party’ on the 17th. The next day, BIGFLO attended Asia New Star Model Search 2016 at Pavilion KL as the special guest.

APR 19 – RAINBOW’s Jaekyung spotted in Malaysia, especially Penang and Kuala Lumpur.

APR 21 – Cosmetic brand by YG entertainment, Moonshot opened their first store in Malaysia and Sandara Park was here to attend the grand launch.

APR 23 till 24 – 24K First Showcase in Malaysia 2016.

MAY 06 – Korean cosmetic is booming in Malaysia as Lee Sung Kyung visited Kuala Lumpur for ‘LANEIGE Beauty Road 2016‘ held at Mid Valley.

MAY 21 – Everyone’s oppa, RAIN, held ‘RAIN Tour in Malaysia The Squall 2016’ at Arena of Stars Genting Highlands.

JULY ~ SEPTEMBER

JULY 12 till 15 – SHINee’s Onew and DIA’s Chaeyeon were in Sabah for the recording of tvN’s show “Eat, Sleep, Eat”.

JULY 23 till 24 – B.I.G First Showcase in Malaysia 2016.

AUG 13 – It was good to see iKON again, and this time in our own country for iKONCERT 2016 Showtime Tour.

AUG 13 till 14 – RoadBoyz First Showcase in Malaysia 2016.

AUG 25 till 28 – Roy Kim visited Malaysia for few days for his promo tour. We were lucky to catch him for a chat!

SEP 10 till 12 – Rising singer, DEAN held a showcase and fan signing in Kuala Lumpur. We also met him at the press conference.

OCTOBER ~ DECEMBER

OCT 1 – Song Ji Hyo was loved by Malaysian fans. This can be seen as thousands of fans flocked Fahrenheit 88, KL just to get a glimpse at her during ‘SHOOPEN Grand Opening‘ event.

OCT 1 – BIGBANG MADE V.I.P Tour in Kuala Lumpur. It was kinda lacking something as only 4 members were here, without T.O.P!

OCT 7-9 – HyunA is the special guest at H-Artistry 2016. We also managed to catch her for an interview.

OCT 10 – Pavilion was packed with thousands of fans as everyone wanted ‘A Date with Kim Rae Won‘. Probably this was the most packed crowd for a Korean celebrity visit as to date!

OCT 14 – Korean drama, ‘Doctors’ fans were delighted as Park Shin Hye visited Malaysia the same week as her co-star for ‘MAMONDE Flower Garden with Park Shin Hye‘. Too bad we didn’t see them in one frame together!

NOV 4 – JJCC at Monspace Anniversary Event @ MAEPS Serdang

NOV 5 – Hello Venus Borneon Run 2016 @ Likas Sports Complex

NOV 6 – ‘Royal Pirates Meet the Fans‘ at Berjaya Time Square. Yes, they only met with the fans, not performing any songs. The main reason for this visit was to be one of the guest judges for ‘Astro Star Quest 2016’.

NOV 26 – We are amazed at how much Malaysia loves Lee Kwang Soo! Or maybe Kwang Soo just loves Malaysia so much (lol). He was back again for the 5th time for Running Man Challenge and yes, never failed to attract the crowd.

NOV 28 till DEC 4 – As the recognition of Hallyu growing in Malaysia, K-popped! was invited to South Korea for ‘Power Blogger Program 2016’! Read our travelogue here.

DEC 4 – GOT7 Flight Log : Turbulence in Malaysia 2016.

DEC 7 – Fans were caught by surprised when they saw Jay Park showing up at KLIA without any official announcement. It’s all because he was attending the ‘Air Asia’s Allstar Annual Dinner’ (private event).

DEC 10 – ‘Park Bo Gum Fan Meeting in Malaysia‘, our personal favourite fan meeting for this year!

DEC 26 – Talented Akdong Musician brought ‘AKMU Studio in Malaysia‘.

DEC 29 till 30 – New Year Eve K-pop Party with HALO & MAP6

DEC 31 – Countdown Party with Royal Pirates @ Desa Park City, KL

We are happy to see how much Hallyu is growing in Malaysia. Not only K-pop and K-dramas, Korean cosmetic brands can be seen spreading fast this year. Eager to see what will happen to Hallyu this 2017. Happy New Year!
