An Easy Guide to The King : Eternal Monarch for Those Just Tuning In

You don’t want to miss out!

The King: Eternal Monarch is generating a lot of buzz around the world, and for good reason! The captivating series incorporates fantasy, romance, mystery, and more into a fascinating story. Furthermore, there’s lots of star power with popular actors Lee Min-ho, Kim Go-eun, and Woo Do-hwan leading the drama. If you’re late to the show, catch up below!

The Set-Up

There are two parallel universes. Yes, two different worlds that mirror each other with identical people living different lives in each world.

Lee Min-ho portrays Emperor Lee Gon from one universe where there’s a constitutional monarchy.
Kim Go-eun portrays Detective Jeong Tae-eul from the other universe which is similar to present-day Korea.

Why Are We Seeing Parallel Worlds?

25 years ago, Lee Gon’s power-hungry uncle Lee Lim killed Lee Gon’s father because Lee Lim desired ownership of a magical flute.

8-year-old Lee Gon discovered his dying father and ended up cutting the flute in half while protecting himself.

A mysterious figure saves young Lee Gon, but Lee Lim escapes with one half of the magical flute and discovers the parallel universe. The mysterious savior leaves behind Jeong Tae-eul’s detective badge from 2019.

Lee Lim is a true baddie.

Fast Forward 25 Years

Lee Gon is all grown up (super handsomely) and discovers the portal to the parallel universe with his half of the magical flute. He realizes the worlds are very different and there are doppelgängers with different lives in each world.

The Protagonists Meet

Lee Gon gets VERY excited when he crosses over into the other world and meets Jeong Tae-eul since she’s somehow connected to his life getting saved 25 years ago. Naturally, Jeong Tae-eul thinks Lee Gon is crazy when he tries to convince her he’s an emperor from another world.

If you’re an emperor and your buttons are real diamonds, I’m Princess Diana.

However, she starts to believe him when he takes her to his world and she sees everything firsthand. She also begins to reciprocate his romantic feelings. Ooh la la~ cue the romance!

Bad News

While the romance is brewing, resident baddie Lee Lim has major plans underway. He’s been luring people to his side for 25 years by offering them a chance to live a better life. What’s the catch? You have to kill and replace your doppelgänger.

Lee Lim also hasn’t aged at all thanks to the flute and its magical time-stopping properties.

A United Team

Lee Gon is aware that his uncle has evil plans in store, so he fills in people he trusts and prepares to fight. As a detective, Jeong Tae-eul is determined to find out the truth about various murder investigations. The couple team up as they resolve to protect people from both worlds while enjoying some cute romance too.
