Korea hopes to attract more Muslim tourists

Published on July 7, 2009 by in Travel

It’s not easy to find halal food in Korea. Thus KTO has come up with the halal lunch box! Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) now aims to attract Muslim tourists and will tailor-make tour programs to suit tourists from the Middle East and Southeast Asia. KTO recently educated 40 travel agents and tour guides on Islamic culture. They have also introduced a halal food lunchbox into their tours. Travel agents in Korea have noted that the biggest obstacle to attracting Muslim tourists is strict rules on food and prayer. It is not easy to find “halal food” especially in Korea where pork is commonly served in all restaurants. Halal restaurants are very rare in Korea and there are almost none outside Seoul, Busan and Jeju. Tour guides usually take Muslim travelers to seafood restaurants, Indian or Pakistani eateries, or vegetarian restaurants. The travelers don’t get to taste Korean food. Thus, with this in mind, KTO designed the “halal lunchbox”. It contains Korean food such as bulgogi and kimchi (i would assume) so that Muslim tourists can also experience the food which they see consumed in Korean movies or dramas. KTO also recently opened a prayer room at the Tourism Information Center

Our visit to 63 Building

Published on June 14, 2009 by in Seoul, Travel

If you are a tourist, like us, be sure to grab one of those guide maps to help you navigate around the building All of a sudden I have the urge to blog about our travels. So here’s an entry on 63 Building in Yeouido Island, Seoul. We visited Yeouido on a cloudy Sunday morning last autumn. K-popped! Trio took the subway from the heart of Seoul (Jongno-3-ga stop) to Yeouido. First we attended service at the biggest church in the world, Yeouido Full Gospel Church. Here in Yeuido is where most of the broadcasting stations are located. The MBC, SBS and KBS buildings are all in this area. After church, we walked along the tree-lined sidewalk taking in the beautiful autumn scenery and visited Noryangjin Fish Market and 63 Building (63 빌딩). We opted to take a cab for the short journey to 63 Building because it started to drizzle. Cabs in Korea all have very sophisticated gadgets, like what you see in this one…equipped with GPRS & Tmoney payment sytem. Daehan Life Insurance 63 Building is more well known as just 63 Building. The skyscraper which stands 249 meters (817 feet) high is the 3rd tallest building in

Shopping for Korean Celebrity Merchandise

Fancy drinking from a Rain mug? Check outthe other choices you have in the background…mugs of your favourite Korean star One evening, when we were walking along the streets of Myeongdong in Seoul, we came across a shop selling Korean celebrities’ merchandise. From CDs to calendars to mugs, the store had all sorts of paraphernalia of your favourite stars! I remember seeing lots of Bae Yong-joon, Hyun Bin, Super Junior, Won Bin, DBSK…etc. But be careful, everything in this shop is shockingly overpriced! I can’t believe i walked away with a set of Rain post-it pads for RM20 though! In retrospect, i should have brought a Rain mug back instead. Ah then i could drink from a Bi mug everyday! This is the street in Myeongdong where we found the shop Check out the packaging for this post-it pad set of Korean star Rain (Jung Ji-hoon) The little booklet unfolds to reveal four different types of post-it pads. Each with a Rain stamp at the bottom. It makes a great gift. Lots more to explore in the store… More stories of our trip to Seoul

The Korean sauna towel hat

Published on November 3, 2008 by in Seoul, Travel

As I type this post, Liz and Orchid are in the skies and halfway to Seoul from Kuala Lumpur. I will be joining them tomorrow. So today is preparation day and, passports and important travel items aside, I’ve been practicing folding the sauna towel hat made famous by the 2005 hallyu drama, My Lovely Kim Sam-soon. How to fold the Lamb Towel/Potato Towel/Princess Leia Towel. Step 1: Lay the towel flat. Step 2: Fold the towel into thirds lengthwise. Step 3: Roll the ends like you would roll the sleevesof a long sleeved shirt. Step 4: Roll ends until middle width fits the diameter of your head. This diameter fits a very small head… …a perfect fit for the grouchy family pet who wishesRooster would stop using her as a test subject.

Boseong and Cameron Highlands Tea Plantations

A couple of weeks ago, our Korean teacher gave us a green tea bag each. Son-saeng-nim (teacher) said that she bought it in K-town, Ampang and want us to try her favourite brand of green tea. It’s from South Korea’s famous Boseong Plantations and the tea leaves are plucked when young, thus giving the tea a very light refreshing taste. The Korean words on the tea package says: 보성녹차 (Boseong nok-cha) , it means “Boseong Green Tea” Enjoy Boseong nok-cha hot or cold.I like it chilled with ice. Very refreshing! Son-saeng-nim also told us that the Boseong Tea Plantation was the filming location for the 2003 Korean drama Summer Scent (여름향기) which stars Song Seung-heon and Son Ye-jin. Have you seen this drama? Summer Scent was filmed at Boseong Boseong Tea Plantation, South Korea The Boseong Dongwon Tea Plantation is located on the southwest coast of the Korean Peninsula. The plantation was established in 1957 and ideal months to visit are May – August. Boseong is Korea’s largest tea-producing city and produces 40% of the country’s domestic tea. If you visit the rolling hills of Boseong during the Boseong Green Tea Festival (May), you will be able to purchase just-harvested,

Beaches of South Korea

Published on February 21, 2008 by in Travel

Today is Chap Goh Meh, the last day of the Lunar New Year, and I’m back in 0º Beijing. But before leaving Malaysia and right after having fun and good food with Liz and Orchid back home in Kuala Lumpur, I made a quick trip to Redang, one of Malaysia’s many beautiful islands that dot the peninsula, for some fun in the sun. I just love the salty sea breeze between my toes. Well, okay, there’s nothing K-popped in Redang besides the odd Korean tourist or two, but it led me to wonder about what the beaches are like in South Korea. Perhaps the Trio could fit it into our itinerary if we were to visit Hallyuland (*nudge*wink* right Liz and Orchid?)? Haeundae Beach (해운대 해수욕장)South Korea’s most popular beach attracting hundreds of thousands of people every year to its shores during the summer months. Located in Busan, you can view the first sunrise of the year (if you like that sorta thing) on Haeundae on January 1st. The beach is also famous for many cultural events and festivals held throughout the year. Er… that’s not exactly my idea of fun. I think I’ll skip Haeundae. More info: Tour2Korea: Haeundae

In-flight K-entertainment onboard MAS

We’re leavin’ on a jet plane… …don’t know when we’ll be back again K-popped! flew home on a Malaysian Airlines flight on Nov 19. I couldn’t help but check out the in-flight entertainment for K-pop stuff. Note: this entry applies to the KL – Beijing/ Beijing – KL route. Before take-off: An Air China plane was parked beside us Goodbye Beijing: Chai chian (Mandarin for goodbye) Beijing!God-willing, we’ll see ya again The MH371 flight didn’t offer in-seat entertainment but had an overhead screening system. Thus, you couldn’t pick and choose the movies you’d like to watch. Everyone watches the same program being screened. D’oh!: MAS’ in-flight entertainment guide has errors! However, there’s the radio selection to keep you entertained throughout the 6-hour flight. The entertainment guide states that the Korean selections could be found on Channel 9. Don’t be fooled, it was printed incorrectly as the Korean channel was on Channel 8. Error: The Korean selections were on Channel 8,thank you very much Twenty-three tracks were played on a loop, with very minimal interruption from the host of the program, Jae Eun-yoon. She only introduced, like, one song and the rest was played back-to-back. Among the songs on the list
