[Movie review] Hitman: Agent Jun

It’s been a while since we’ve last seen 2000’s heartthrob Kwon Sang Woo (of Stairway to Heaven fame), so we jumped at the chance to watch a preview of his latest film, Hitman: Agent Jun, directed by Choi Won Sub (My Burning Heart). Presented by TGV and ATriNaga, the preview was held at TGV 1 Utama.

The movie is about NIS super agent Jun, who is sick of working as a spy and fakes his death in order to fulfill his true dream – working as a webtoon artist.

Making a hit webtoon isn’t easy, and 15 years later, Jun is struggling to support his exasperated wife Mi Na (Hwang Woo Seul Hye) and ‘Show Me the Money’ fan/rapper-wannabe daughter Ga Young (Lee Ji Won).

After  getting drunk one day, he ends up drawing his real experience as a spy, and wakes up to find the comic has gone viral…. And now the NIS and terrorists are after him!

With his dedicated former spy protege Chul (Lee Yi Kyung), former ‘trainer from hell’ Duk Gyu (Jung Joon Ho) and vindictive chief of the NIS, Hyung Do (Heo Sung Tae) all after him, you get an action-packed movie that’s full of laughs, with touching moments here and there.

A mixture of animation (for his spy flashbacks) and live action, we loved his sassy daughter Ga Young, who despite her prickly exterior, loves her dad (despite his terrible webtoon), and Duk Gyu. The scenes with Duk Gyu and Jun provided plenty of laughs – some members of the audience couldn’t stop laughing even after certain scenes had ended.

Being a spy flick, the action scenes are great, and Kwon Sang Woo looks every bit the action hero. The story is nothing revolutionary, but you will definitely be highly entertained.

Hitman: Agent Jun will be released on 20 February in Malaysia.
