Spotify’s flagship K-pop playlist ‘K-Pop Daebak’ celebrates its 7th anniversary

Celebrating the 7th anniversary of ‘K-Pop Daebak’, Spotify – the world’s most popular audio streaming subscription service – today announced key global data around its flagship K-pop playlist.

Since its official debut on September 12th, 2014 as Spotify’s first official editorial K-pop playlist, K-Pop Daebak has grown into one of Spotify’s most important flagship playlists. Currently with over 3.1 million followers on Spotify worldwide, the playlist has been serving as a global hub to K-pop – introducing Korean artists to both K-pop fans and new listeners around the world.

Revealing data on 7 years of K-pop Daebak… Nearly 5.3 billion minutes streamed on this single playlist

According to Spotify, the playlist alone reached approximately 1.7 billion streams worldwide, and was streamed for nearly 5.3 billion minutes over the past seven years. In calculation, this is over 88 million hours which also translates into an equivalent of over 10,000 years.

The playlist also helped boost the global discovery of K-pop, including new rising Korean artists and worldwide K-pop stars. It was discovered that for the past 7 years, around 70,000 tracks have been featured on K-pop Daebak alone.

The playlist is most enjoyed by Gen Z, from age 18 to 24 (51%)

Spotify additionally disclosed the age group and the countries that streamed K-Pop Daebak the most. Over the last 7 years, the playlist was most enjoyed by Gen Z with over half of the streams coming from the age group of 18-24 (51%), followed by 25-29 (20%), 17 or under (13%). The age group of 30-34 (8%), 35-44 (6%), others (2%) followed accordingly.

The top 10 countries that have listened to the flagship playlist the most throughout 7 years were, in order of rank: the United States, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, Canada, Brazil, and Australia.

In addition to K-Pop Daebak, Spotify offers a wide range of playlists and music from Korean artists through its global K-pop hub. Playlists range from ‘RADAR Korea’ and ‘Fresh Finds Korea’ dedicated to helping listeners discover newly rising Korean artists, to R&B and Hip Hop focused ‘TrenChill K-R&B’, ‘K-Hip Hop +82’, indie music focused ‘In The K-Indie’ and way beyond. The hub also has multiple playlists filled with tracks from Korea that are ever-evolving, organized per various themes, moods and moments.

Furthermore, since launching its service in Korea back in February, Spotify has also accelerated its support for Korean labels and artists by providing Masterclasses of its Spotify for Artists platform, featuring various cutting-edge tools and data, to empower them to connect with a larger global audience.
