Asia’s leading entertainment and lifestyle company, CJ ENM, revealed today that the host for ‘2021 Mnet ASIAN MUSIC AWARDS (MAMA), the World’s No.1 K-Pop music awards ceremony, will be legendary K-pop icon Lee Hyori. This is MAMA’s first female host.

The MAMA host is the storyteller that communicates MAMA’s messages and values and serves as the bridge between artists and global music fans. Each year, Kpop’s biggest artists have appeared as hosts including: Song Joong-ki, Lee Seung-gi, Song Seung-heon, Psy, Lee Byung-hun, Park Bo-gum, Jung Hae-in, etc.

This year’s host is a living legend that has been pioneering the K-pop scene for more than 20 years. She embodies the past, present and future of K-pop and is a trendsetting artist. She is praised as a role model for the younger generation of K-pop artists and as the queen of K-pop to music fans.

CJ ENM also revealed the concept for 2021 MAMA to be, ‘MAKE SOME NOISE’. A representative from Mnet stated “This year, we plan to showcase the power of music that breaks prejudice and respects the diversity of everyone’s values.” With this in mind, Lee Hyori was an unrivaled fit for this year.

Expanding its footprint across the globe, MAMA continues to make history as a pioneer in the K-pop industry. It was not only the first K-pop awards show to be hosted across the world, but also the first ever K-pop awards ceremony to be held in two or more regions in 2017 (Vietnam, Japan and Hong Kong) and 2018 (Korea, Japan and Hong Kong). In 2019, MAMA was the first K-pop awards ceremony held in a dome stadium.

MAMA will continue its goal of expanding the influence of K-pop and communicating with global fans. This year, under the concept of ‘MAKE SOME NOISE’, MAMA aims to unite fans all over the world regardless of background, generation and language through K-pop and the power of music.

Hyun Soo Kim, Head of Music Entertainment at CJ ENM said, “We are excited for viewers to tune in to experience the connection and unity where artists, fans, and millions of different voices around the world become one through MAMA and music. The sound we need most is the cheers from global fans, so we want to encourage everyone to express their love for music and K-pop at MAMA.”

Meanwhile, to further solidify MAMA’s influence as a global music awards ceremony, MAMA will be adding global data to the judging criteria. In addition to the data from Gaon Chart, Twitter, and Youtube used in the previous years, MAMA will add data from the global streaming platform ‘Apple Music’ serviced in 167 countries and regions in the judging criteria to reflect the global trends of K-pop fans. ‘2021 MAMA’ will be broadcasted worldwide on December 11, 6PM (KST).
