Why SQUID GAME is A Fresh Take On The Survival Game

There are fun differences!

Squid Game is turning heads all over the world with its gripping tale about cash-strapped individuals playing deathly childhood games in order to win a large cash prize. If you haven’t watched the series yet, you should because the hype is valid. Squid Game is able to stand out because it’s different from any survival genre shows you’ve seen. Check out some evidence below!

It’s All About Choice

Squid Game is unique in that the players choose to participate in the games. In any other survival flick, choice isn’t an option due to external factors. While the Squid Game participants are initially unaware that losing results in death, they play more games even after knowing this fact. This choice reflects the utterly desperate situations each of them are in.

Deeper Themes

At surface value, Squid Game is very thrilling as the games take place and more contestants are killed. However, the bloodshed serves a purpose and highlights the deeper messages of the series. Director Hwang Dong-hyuk has talked about how the series is an allegory for modern capitalist society as depicted by the extreme competition. Beyond the excitement, there’s a philosophical factor to it and actual depth.

Childhood Games

Another key difference is the usage of childhood games. While many survival genre shows focus on mind games or require physical prowess, the games of Squid Game are much more relatable. You see games that you’ve most likely played in your childhood, like Red Light, Green Light. Even if you haven’t played all of the games before, the rules are pretty easy to understand. With no need to be confused over the games, we can focus on other interesting facets of the series.

Emotional Appeal

Most shows will focus on one or two main protagonists to root for. However, Squid Game features several characters you won’t be able to help but feel empathy for. The contestants come from all walks of life, but they’re all in desperate straits which is why they’re willing to risk their lives for the prize money. As we watch their stories and see them build relationships with other contestants, we get more emotionally drawn in.

Unique Aesthetic

Many survival genre shows incorporate a lot of VFX, especially if it’s dystopian or set in a harsh environment like the ocean. Squid Game, however, utilizes large-scale sets that are colorful and reminiscent of enormous playgrounds. The masked workers’ bright pink suits, the players’ green tracksuits, and the pastel-toned settings add a unique visual appeal. All of the vibrant colors and giant settings make for a one-of-a-kind backdrop for the deadly children’s games.
