Melancholia: The moments that we gave our all, even when there were no answers

Melancholia is a 16-episode drama starring Lee Do-hyun (18 Again, Sweet Home, Beyond Evil, Hotel del Luna) and Im Soo-jung (Search: WWW, Chicago Typewriter, I’m Sorry, I Love You, Mothers). Set in a private school that is rampant with corruption and preferential treatment, this drama tells the story of a math teacher and a genius math student fight to overcome social prejudices when they meet again as adults several years later.

Ji Yoon-soo (Im Soo-jung) is a math teacher at a private high school. She is an idealistic teacher who encourages her students to find their own answers and prove themselves. Baek Seung-yoo (Lee Do-hyun) is a student at the school. He currently ranks last in school for academics, but has a hidden past. Yoon-soo notices Seung-yoo’s potential in math, and with her care and interaction, Seung-yoo’s grade improves and becomes number one in class. However, she never knew that this innocent attention would cause a teacher-student scandal rumour among other students and parents, which leads to her to getting fired. Several years later Yoon-soo and Seung-yoo meet again, now as adults, they come together to reveal the
corruptions in school, and to regain her reputation as a teacher.

Im Soo-jung portrays her character’s innocent passion and willpower with fantastic attention to details. Ji Yoon-soo wants to teach students about the joys of math, even though they are caught up in the abyss of college entrance examinations. Flawlessly immersing himself in his role, Lee Do Hyun transforms into Baek Seung-yoo, who voluntarily becomes an outsider while hiding his past as a child math prodigy. Both Im Soo-jung and Lee Do-hyun perfectly immersed themselves into their roles, creating a refreshing and pure atmosphere. Instead of looking for a fixed answer like in a math problem, the two actors will focus on the process of finding the solution through this drama.

It is the drama comeback of Im Soo-jung after 2 years, viewers can look forward to a new performance by her who will touch viewers’ hearts once more with her acting. Lee Do-hyun has been winning many drama awards and praised for his acting in many projects. Viewers can expect his genuine acting that will be discovered again in this drama.

Created by Studio Dragon, Melancholia is helmed by the director Kim Sang-hyeob who has been praised for his directing in recent drama “True Beauty.” The drama is written by screenwriter Kim Ji-woon, who previously wrote highly rated “Doctor John.”

Melancholia will premiere on K-PLUS starting 11 November 2021, Thursday at 9.15pm SGT. New episodes will air weekly on every Thursday & Friday at 9.15pm SGT.
