[Event Coverage] Grandwave Kpop Music Festival Was Sunshine After The Rain – Literally!

Grandwave Kpop Music Festival at Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach was finally materialised, after it was first postponed due to the 15th general election on November 19 2022. The concert organisers managed to maintain the same line up which includes HYOYEON, DJ SODA, Park Bom, CHEN, Youngjae, Shaun, and B.I.

The wet weather didn’t dampen the fans’ enthusiasm as some were already in queue from as early as 6.30am. By 10am, hundreds were already in line, hoping to get the best place to stand in their own respective sections.

At 5.30pm, the doors were open to let the fans in. Throngs of fans ran inside to get their positions for the concert. Once their position were secured, many were heard crying out for water but didn’t get any as they were not allowed to bring in any bottled water. They were however allowed to buy them in the venue but none of them wanted to leave their best position, so they tough it out until the end.

The emcees for the day were the djs from FlyFM, JoKeRs (Juanita, Kavin and Ryan). At around 6.30pm, they came and got the crowd hyped up before the concert starts with Park Bom.

Park Bom opens the concert with a short version of one of 2Ne1’s hit, Fire, and continued with Spring. The venue was definitely on fire, and the fans were all singing along, even though the songs were at least 12 years old!

The show continues on with Park Bom performing hit after hit such as 4:44, Don’t Cry, You and I, Shameful, and Do Re Mi Fa Sol. Excited seeing a 2Ne1 lighstick in the crowd, the singer (with the help of security guards and her dancers), came down to the fans and grabbed the lightstick and waved it around. She managed to greet some of the fans and bid adieu.

The second act of the night needs no introduction as Youngjae from Got7 showed up on stage and further heats up the Surf Beach. Youngjae performed Sugar, Vibin, Tasty, Focus and Crema. During one of the ment, the singer noticed that the fans were replying to his questions, without waiting for the translator to translate. Amazed by this, Youngjae asked “I’m in Malaysia right? How can everyone understand Korean?”.

Youngjae’s performance was followed by the famous OST guy, the one and only EXO CHEN. Dressed in autumn clothes, which I’m sure is a bit hot in Malaysian weather, CHEN started belting out songs from his solo albums – Shall We…, Beautiful Goodbye, Last Scene, and I Don’t Even Mind. Fans were also singing along and waving their EXO lighsticks. The singer promised to come again with the rest of EXO, before closing his performance with fan favourites, Best Luck and Everytime.

SHAUN came up next and started his act with Traveler. The singer thanked the fans for singing along with him – he thinks he’s not that popular in Malaysia and he was wrong! Equipped with a band, SHAUN performed Lunisolar, Road, Closed Ending, Bad Habits, and Don’t Let Me Know before closing with the popular Way Back Home.

The night’s performance got hotter and DJ SODA came on with her set. Entertaining the concert goers for a full hour, she managed to make everyone dance with her song selections. Not shy with the fans, DJ SODA kept going to the fans and dance along.

Hanbin, or more famously known as B.I came up next and this was when fans became a bit aggressive. Everyone started pushing to get to the front, or at least closer to the stage. B.I performed Waterfall, Cosmos, Illusions, Lover, Flame, BTBT and his latest song Keep Me Up. He manage to sneak in a Malay frame “Saya Cinta Kamu” and trust me, I can feel the fans swoon. Happy with the reception from the fans, he promised to come again and said that he would probably add Malaysia to his tour. Hmm, let’s if he can slot us in to his schedule.

The ending act of the night, the queen, Hyoyeon of Girls Generation came up and started her set with Girls Generation’s Forever One. At this stage, all the fans were screaming and dancing along to her song selections. Things heated up further when Hyo came up to the center stage from her turntable and started performing her solo single Dessert. DJ Hyo then continues on with several more songs on the turntable before closing the show.

Such a perfect finish to a wonderful concert. Fans were tired but left the venue feeling happy after watching their favourite acts on stage.
