Movie Review: Hi-Five

We were invited to the premiere to Hi-Five at TGV Cinemas and we have to say it deserves 10/10! The latest Korean film to show in Malaysia, it tells the story of five outcasts who receive superpowers after receiving organ transplants and the villain trying to collect all their powers.

At the heart of the film is highschool student and unwilling loner Park Wan-seo (Lee Jae-in), whose heart problems and overprotective dad (played by Oh Jung-se) means she has no friends, spending her days at her dad’s taekwondo studio. Things change as her heart transplant results in super speed and strength, catching the eye of wannabe writer Park Ji-sung (Ahn Jae-won) who works together with her to find everyone with powers. Having received a lung transplant, Ji-sung’s power is holding and blowing air, to hilarious effect.

Yoo Ah-in plays Ki-dong, a quirky loner who receives a corneal transplant and can see electromagnetic waves, essentially controlling all electronic items with the snap of his fingers. Ki-dong is arrogant, using his powers to get rich (and in trouble) quick, as well as living his best life, complete with music.

The terrific Ra Mi-ran plays yogurt seller Kim Sun-nyeo, who receives a kidney transplant and has no apparent powers, but Wan-seo and Ji-sung don’t lose hope, bringing her (and a reluctant Ki-dong) into their unlikely group of friends.

Rounding them out is the shy and burnt out factory manager Huh Yak-son (Kim Hee-won) who has the power to heal, having received a liver transplant.

Action, comedy, heart – this film has got it all. The are so many funny moments, it’s not hard to understand why the whole cinema was roaring with laughter, from an outrageous chase scene that gets Rickrolled, to a lifesaving scene to Ki-dong’s over the top finger clicking. I would watch the movie again just to watch the chase scene, it’s just that funny.

Got7 fans squealed when their idol Park Jinyoung appeared onscreen as…. Well you’ll have to watch the film.

Hi-Five is screening in cinemas now. 10/10 with fifty finger snaps and a chicken wing.
