[Event Coverage] Jackson Wang Turns Up The Heat At Good Vibes Weekender 2022, Day 2

After an exciting first day with with 2NE1 leader and certified badass CL, K-pop fans flocked Sunway Lagoon to catch Jackson Wang in action. The Got7 member, Team Wang founder, CEO, and solo artist flew in hours before the show, where eager fans awaited his arrival at KLIA.

Once the gates to Sunway opened, fans ran to secure their spot in front of the Red Stage. The festival kicked off with local singers liesl-mae, The Peachskins, Leaism, and Nyk, although technical difficulties saw delays as The Peachskins had to restart a song due to the mic not working, and the lights and mic turned off during Leaism’s set.

Local band Late Night Frequency upped the vibe with some disco funk and a saxophone-playing wolf. Shallou, an ambient DJ from the US, showcased his relaxed beats, while local rapper Yonnyboii hyped the crowd, whose energy rose as Filipino singer Beabadoobee hit the stage with band, bringing Avril Lavigne vibes and 2000’s nostalgia to the crowd.

She was followed by US singer-songwriter Pink Sweats, whose falsetto was dare we say, perfect. With his crew in pink and white, and a gigantic pink teddy bear in the background, we knew we were in for a good show. When he performed ‘17‘, a small part of us was hoping Seventeen members DK and Joshua would suddenly appear (the two members featured on a version of the song), but the solo artist wow’ed us all,

The ‘At My Worst‘ hitmaker also engaged in a drum battle with his drummer, showcasing his many talents, and was also the first to cross over from the Blue Stage to the Red Stage, ensuring crowds on both sides were engaged.

As Pink Sweats left the stage and the lights dimmed, the crowd’s energy was at an all time high and the screams and chanted of ‘Jackson’ and ‘Wang Jia Er’ filled the lagoon. It was obvious that the majority of fans that night were here for Jackson, as they waved lightsticks, fans and posters with his name and face, with some wearing Team Wang gear. Having stood for over 7 hours in the sun, heat, and technical delays, the fans were nothing if not dedicated.

After a video intro, Jackson segued straight into an electric performance of his 2020 hit, ‘100 Ways‘, that had the crowd cheering (and swooning), before performing songs like ‘Champagne Cool’, ‘Drive it like You Stole It’, ‘Dopamine’, ‘Blue’ and his two newer hits, the theatrical ‘Cruel’ and ‘Blow.’

The cheers were thunderous, as the crowd sang and screamed to everyone, as Jackson and his charismatic crew of backup dancers filled the stage – no props, no gimmicks needed. His strong live vocals and dance skills were on display, as he performed each song with gusto.

Fans were eager to interact with Jackson, screaming out in answer to his questions of whether they could understand Cantonese, and recommending him to go to mamak after the show – although from his confused expression, he seemed to think mamak was a restaurant, telling the fans ‘I’ll see you at Mamak later!” to their delight. While Jackson did not go to a mamak, he and the Team Wang crew partied at SIX by Saro, an upscale club at Pavilion Elite once Good Vibes ended.

His one-hour set passed in the blink of an eye, with fans crying for more. Jackson promised to return as part of his ongoing Magic Man tour… And he kept his promise, announcing this week that he’ll be back in KL on December 17!
