Typhoon (2005)

Korean title: 태풍 (Tae-poong)

Director:
Kwak Gyeong-taek (곽경택)

Cast:
Jang Dong-gun (장동건)
Lee Jeong-jae (이정재)
Lee Mi-yeon (이미연)

What’s popping:

The K-popped Sisters watched Typhoon recently. However, one of the sisters fell asleep half-way though the movie. So you can guess that the movie wasn’t all that entrancing.

Jang Dong-gun looks really scruffy and unkempt in this movie. If Uhm Jung-hwa is Korea’s Madonna, then Jang is Korea’s Johnny Depp (in the looks department, in this movie).

The plot:

In this political action thriller, Choi Myung-sin (Jang Dong-gun) and his sister Choi Myung-ju (Lee Mi-yeon) are the only survivors of their family when they tried to defect from North Korea to the South. Sin’s family was turned away by the South Korean government at that time because the government feared complicating their relationship with China. Sin witnessed the death of both his parents and from then on harboured hatred and disgust for South Korea (which “rejected” him and his family).

All grown up now, and separated from his only surviving sister, he hijacks a ship and steals nuclear missile guidance kits. His plan is to release nuclear gas to destroy the Korean peninsular. The National Intelligence Service finds out of this, and dispatches naval officer Kang Se-jong (Lee Jeong-jae) to hunt Sin down.

Pirate Sin steals nuclear missile guidance kits
with plans to destroy the Korean peninsular!
What a plan…

Although the plot sounds interesting and serious, the movie wasn’t very engaging. There was no chemistry between both the leads and despite the fact that they try to cultivate a bond between Sin and Kang, it did not work.
